Junior Humane Award

We're looking for a few great kids!

While teenagers in trouble create headlines everyday, Helen Woodward Animal Center is seeking nominations of GREAT kids for the first, “Deora Bodley Junior Humane Award.” The award, named in memory of 9/11 victim Deora Bodley, will honor a youngster between 13 and 17 years of age who has gone above and beyond to help animals. Nominations are being accepted until 5:00 PM on Friday, July 31, 2009.   

“Deora lost her life on September 11, 2001 when Flight 93 went down in Pennsylvania,” says Helen Woodward Animal Center spokesman John Van Zante. “We’re not naming this award after Deora because of her death, but because of what she did with her life.”  

Van Zante says that Deora was not only an amazing student at La Jolla Country Day School, she was also an amazing Junior Volunteer at Helen Woodward Animal Center.  

On September 24, 2001 Deora’s mother, Debby Borza, joined the families of others who died on Flight 93, meeting with President Bush at the White House. Debby later recalled, “I told the President that Deora’s life was his gift to go into the world and make a difference… a world that works for everyone.”  

The Deora Bodley Junior Humane Award will be presented to a San Diego County teenager who meets the following criteria:

    • Has performed a heroic or lifesaving deed benefiting animals
    • Is devoted to enhance the lives of animals
    • Has used ingenuity and creativity to develop and implement an idea that helps animals
 

Nomination forms are available here. Completed nominations can be submitted online, in person at Helen Woodward Animal Center, 6461 El Apajo Road in Rancho Santa Fe, or faxed to 858-756-1466.
