“Our dogs, Seamus and Marlowe, and our cat, Watson, were all adopted from animal shelters.

When I think about animal adoption, I just look at my pets, who have brought immeasurable joy into my life, and I weep with joy. Marlowe, who still somersaults into my lap when she gets excited, the same way she did four years ago when my wife and I first met her. Seamus, who follows me around my house and lays down at my feet wherever I am. Watson, who is convinced that one day he’ll catch that tail. All of them love us without condition, and are as integral to our family as our children.

And then I think of the shelters that are so full, there isn’t room for pets like ours to find their forever homes, and I weep with sorrow. I think of all the animals who don’t have homes, and the pet stores who keep puppies and kittens in horrible conditions. I think of the irresponsible backyard breeders who dump the animals they can’t sell, and I think of the people who have been fooled into thinking that a dog without a pedigree isn’t worth their love.

I’m proud of the work Anne and I have done to raise money for PHS, to dispel the myths about pitbulls, and to encourage everyone to adopt, not shop. But we have more work to do, more shelters to clear, and more animals who need help finding their forever homes.

On Remember Me Thursday®, and every day of the year, please join us, and help make a difference in the lives of wonderful, beautiful, loving animals everywhere.
