Slim Shady was getting more slim by the hour…..

He sits on the cold cement floor, day in and day out, gently trying to get their attention. Why does no one notice me? He feels weaker and weaker every day but there is no chance for nourishment.

He feels so hungry, but there seems to be no chance of getting his share of the food from his larger roommate. Tired and frail, he lays down on the cold floor to sleep; he can feel every rib in his body on the cement.

Maybe they will see me. Just maybe.

But the nightmare just keeps happening.

He hears the humans coming down the hall. They have food bowls in their hands. The door opens and the bowl is placed on the ground. He tries to move in to take a bite, just one bite, but he is bullied away by the other dog.

He looks after the humans. Do you see me? Do you see what’s happening?

He lies down on the floor again, only this time he feels weaker than yesterday…

The Center received “Slim” Shady in early May, from a rescue organization partner. He came from a place where he had to stay with a canine roommate. His roommate, unfortunately, ate all the food, leaving none for Slim. He sat, uncomplaining, for weeks, possibly months, eating hardly anything.

When we met Slim Shady, he was matted, grungy and so thin that when you felt his body, you felt more bone than muscle. It was like touching a handful of twigs. He tipped the scales at barely 4 pounds.

On that day, Helen Woodward Animal Center employees greeted him with, “Hi Slim Shady!” and he wagged his little tail, happy to meet everyone. As we got to know him, Slim was engaged in watching everything around him: the other dogs in the vicinity, and especially, the people. He had such a gentle disposition and friendly, glad-to-meet-you attitude.

Slim Shady is a Chihuahua-Papillion mix and is a year and a half old. He is currently regaining strength and body-weight. As he regains strength, he will be fostered by one of our foster family volunteers. It is volunteers like this that are so vital to saving animals every day!

Slim Shady looks forward to the day when he can return, healthy and well fed, and meet his forever family!
