Abandoned Like Unwanted Luggage
What was that horrible noise? The dog quivered under a scant bush as she watched a plane bounce over the ground in front of her, roar up through the heat, into the air, and out of sight. That noise, the engine roar, was so overwhelming and terrifying. It sent her scattering for cover every time. She continued to hunker, hiding her matted body as best she could.
The noise quieted and she relaxed. Then she saw them. They were coming again. She could see human figures through the heat waves that wafted from the black-as-night tarmac. The dog shrank against the ground in fear. Would they hurt her? Would there be pain again?
Caramel and her story were brought to Helen Woodward Animal Center on July 27th. The rescue partner that brought her told us of her unbelievable plight in the desert. Caramel was found living on the outskirts of an airport in the desert inland area of California. She lived, on the fringe of existence, for two weeks while animal services attempted to catch her. The airport had no fences or gates, so Caramel hid in the scant brush during the day and came to the airport at night, hunting for water and whatever scraps of food she could find. She was lost, neglected and forgotten: like unwanted luggage at an airport.
Caramel also had one feature missing: her left ear had been cut from her head. While that wound had healed physically long ago, it was obvious that her history had left her a little timid and anxious around people.
In light of her past of neglect and abuse, on the day of her arrival, Caramel sat patiently as she was examined by our medical staff. She was filthy and malnourished, ridden with fleas and matted fur. She responded to our voices and hands, showing a sweet and gentle spirit.
Caramel was given time, food, and TLC to help her recovery. She blossomed beautifully. A few days after she was began a search for a new home, a family discovered the sweet and gentle girl we got to know. Her search was over!
Congratulations Caramel! You deserve the love and affection you never found in your previous life. We wish you the best!
